About the city
Although not the capital of Scotland, Glasgow is the largest Scottish city and in many ways the most vibrant. It has the largest population of any town in Scotland, is the principal shopping and commercial centre, has some of the best museums and art galleries around, is respected at home and abroad as a lively cultural centre and has more restaurants, cafes and bars and clubs than you could get through in a year of evenings out.

Transport links to destinations in the UK and abroad are excellent, and of course, if that weren't enough, the other major benefit of Glasgow is that it lies in striking distance of some of the most wonderful countryside in Scotland.

Parks and architecture
Glasgow has over 70 parks and open spaces, more than any other town of its size, so there's always somewhere to escape if you so choose. The city also boasts some wonderful architecture and is considered to be the best example of a Victorian city in existence. Further, the emphasis that has been placed on regeneration and redevelopment in recent years have brought about Glasgow's renaissance as a thriving business, cultural and tourist centre. Not surprising then that it was voted the City of Architecture and Design for 1999.

Museums and galleries
Glasgow has some twenty museums and art galleries all with free admission, so there's never a shortage of exhibitions to see. These include:

The world famous Burrell Collection
Glasgow Art Gallery and Museum
The Transport Museum
Glasgow Gallery of Modern Art

Arts and entertainment
The city also has a strong reputation for the arts at home and abroad and is home to some of Scotland's principal performing arts organisations including: Scottish Opera; Scottish Ballet, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Citizen's Theatre.

In terms of concert and entertainment venues you can take your pick. Some of the more well known include: Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, the Theatre Royal, the City Hall. King's Theatre and the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre.

Shopping
Glasgow has the largest retail district outside London so you know you'll be spoilt for choice. You'll find everything here from designer fashions through to furniture and accessories. Your only difficulty will be knowing where to stop!
